After 7 editions that made them famous, the 24 hours of TMU are about to their eight edition this weekend. Little introduction of this event that make it sold out now.


What's this?


As indicated by their name, the 24 hours of TMU are a real endurance test that is raced on 24 hours, 7 environments and 48 maps. Mandatory hazing for every neophyte before to become a true Trackmaniac, the great race will put everyone's nerves under pressure. Alone in the night, at a speed that defies the physic laws as well as any rule, who wouldn't fear the fatal mistake, this one that leads you in the depths of the standings? And, when the aurora rises, one realize that even less than half of the race has been done. How to describe the developping stress when tireness grows and hours follow one after another?

Now, it is up to the writer to put the uninformed at rest : the 24 hours are a team race: it is not a question of a pilot who drives the entire race, from the start to the epileptic fit! But it keeps an endurance race and many addicts are keen on stay up. But the 24 hours are above all a big laugh where all the TM Community is guest to meet in a great mood. In fact, madnesses on Teamspeak exceed the looks on timetables and round trips to the fridge replace training hours. Actually, there is no train due to the schedule of the competition : the maps are kept secret and delivered only during the race.


Interview


A few days before the start, TM-Actu talked with Garath, who accepted to say us a bit more, between the maps he has to complete or check.
 

 
TM-Actu : Hello Garath, can you introduce yourself and your team, that organizes the 24h for the 8th season now?
 

Garath : Hello TM-Actu followers. Introduce the TEP? Not very hard: We are the Poulidor* of TM for 6 years, especially lately! ^^
 The team has been created by Alex in March 2004 on Trackmania Power-up, and came through all the TM versions since then, waiting for TM2!
 
The 24h have been created in 2007 : we are glad to greet new teams each season, and even more to see the same old faces again for 4 years.
 

 
The 24h, even if they are part of the tradition in TM, attract each year new teams, but few players played them since the beginning. How the idea of this tournament came?
 

Alex had the idea 5 years ago to take the 24 hours of Le Mans' concept and to fit it to TM. After a long talk time to try to transpose the principle as reliably as possible, we came to the rules of the 1st season, that have evolved since then (mostly thanks to the participants).
 
 
To schedule such an event is much work, how do you share the tasks with your teammates?
 
 
Most of the work is to test and touch up the 48 maps. Unlike usual leagues, we ask 48 maps to several mappers and we tuch up them until we get what we expect.
Since testers don't race the 24h, only Bennnnnnn and me deal with that, in order to make the team able to take part to the race. That is why we are now at the 8th season without too much problems: i rage, he thinks and we reach to make things progress.
  
Very much thanks to him for his intact motivation, his extraordinary creativity, and his ability to put up with me! ^^
 
 
This season, the number of players per team will not be limited. Don't you fear technical problems in case of big peak of attendance on the server?
 

Since the runtimes have got eliminated by Nadeo, we didn't met problems with connexions. There are allways difficulties, like when we forgot the server config at the first hour of the season 7. But we have already seen more than 150 players on the server without lags neither disjunctions. Relays will be available as usually. Huge thanks to Vache's unfailing generosity, without which nothing would be possible. 
 
 
What will be the novelties for this 8th season ? A little scoop?
 

This season is actually renamed 24h-WTS. The goal will be to complete each map in the given half-hour...
 
More seriously we hesitated for a long time to use the enviromix technology, but it would have been very too much restrictive, even if it was just the 42 combinations. Thus, the idea was dropped. The 24h has become a mass orgy where everybody is guest : we provide the maps and the servers, then the players make the mood and the fights.
 
The novelty is rather in the mapping : now that the concept is experienced we don't change the rules anymore.
 
 
Do you have a little advice to the newcomers?
 

Even two!
 
The first is to clear the cache, to disable the p2p, to restrict the number of visible opponents...and so on...for all the weak computer set-ups.
 
And the second: ENJOY! And get a RedBull close...
 
 
Thanks Garath for the time you gave to TM-Actu when you are in a rush with the last works.

*Poulidor was a french racing cyclist that completed several times the Tour de France at high ranks, but never 1st. In french, Poulidor is often used to design somebody who is very good and consistent, but who never wins.
